About Cherry Creek
The Arapaho Indians named Cherry Creek in Denver, Colorado for its surplus of chokecherries found along the shores of the creek. During the gold rush, the Smoky Hill Trail became quite a popular thoroughfare from the Missouri River to Denver during the 1800’s.
Believe it or not, due to excess flooding from the creek, the Cherry Creek area once became a dumpsite for garbage. Soon, however, more and more people moved into the neighborhood. In fact, Black homesteaders were the first to settle here. By the 1920’s, this neighborhood was considered a suburb of Denver and still was populated by a predominantly Black community.
Once the Cherry Creek Dam was built to stop the regular flooding of the creek, the neighborhood enjoyed a boom of new tenants and new architecture, taking it from a dumpsite to an upscale neighborhood. Now, it is one of the more coveted neighborhoods in all of Denver, and many of the Black community who still live there—and even grew up there—take pride in their roots and history in the area.
Cherry Creek is definitely a rags to riches story for one of the poorest neighborhoods in Denver to become one of the richest. Come on down and see what all the fuss is about! Book your parking today with On Air Parking and enjoy your time in Colorado’s Cherry Creek.
